Care For Your Smile
Personal Care
Careful brushing and flossing helps to prevent build-up of plaque and calculus (tartar).
The teeth should be brushed at least twice daily and flossed at least once per day. For some people, brushing and flossing may be recommended after every meal and at bedtime. Fluoride-containing, or anti-plaque (tartar control) toothpastes or mouth rinses may be recommended if necessary. Call us any time at 817-481-4717 for instruction or demonstration of proper brushing and flossing techniques if needed.
Professional Care
Regular professional tooth cleaning is important to remove plaque that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in areas that are difficult for a patient to reach on his or her own at home. Professional cleaning includes scaling and polishing. This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth.
We recommend having your teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months. More frequent cleaning and examination may be necessary during the treatment of many dental disorders. Routine examination of the teeth is recommended at least every year. A simple yearly x-rays can prevent a multitude of problems before they get serious..
Your dental health (and overall good health) is important to us! Call us today at 817-481-4717 to take a big step toward good dental hygiene.
About X-Rays
How do dental X-rays work?
When x-rays pass through your mouth during a dental exam, more x-rays are absorbed by the denser parts (teeth and bone) than by soft tissues (cheeks and gums) before striking the film. This creates an image on the radiograph. Teeth appear lighter because fewer x-rays penetrate to reach the film. Cavities and gum disease appear darker because of greater x-ray penetration. The interpretation of these x-rays allows the dentist to safely and accurately detect subtle or hidden abnormalities.
How often shoud X-rays be taken?
How often dental x-rays (radiographs) should be taken depends on a patient's individual health needs. It is important to recognize that just as each patient is different from the next, so should the scheduling of x-ray exams be individualized for each patient. Your dentist will review your history, examine your mouth and then decide whether you need radiographs and what type. If you are a new patient, the dentist may recommend radiographs to determine the present status of the hidden areas of your mouth and to help analyze changes that may occur later.
The schedule for needing radiographs at recall visits varies according to your age, risk for disease, and signs and symptoms. Updated films may be needed to detect new cavities, or to determine the status of gum disease or for evaluation of growth and development. Children may need x-rays more often than adults. This is because their teeth and jaws are still developing and because their teeth are more likely to be affected by tooth decay than those of adults.
What are the benefits of a dental X-Ray examination?
Many diseases of the teeth and surrounding tissues cannot be seen when your dentist examines your mouth.
- An X-Ray examination may reveal:
- Small areas of decay between the teeth
- Infections in the bone
- Abscesses or cysts
- Developmental abnormalities
- Some types of tumors
Finding and treating dental problems at an early stage can save time, money and unnecessary discomfort. It can detect damage to oral structures not visible during a regular exam. If you have a hidden tumor, radiographs may even help save your life.
How do dental X-rays compare to other sources of radiation?
Dental x-rays emit very low radiation. Since the areas being x-rayed are small and thin, it requires little radiation to obtain good films. At Burgess and Mason Family Dentistry, we offer the NOMAD® Dental X-Ray System. This handheld, portable intraoral x-ray system uses minimal radiation and is designed specifically for patient safety and convenience. Turns Out You Have Better Things to do with Your Time
By Scott A. Mason - Dentist, Grapevine Texas
Technology today is changing our everyday lives. Many people, however, aren't aware that technology also is impacting dentistry in new and exciting ways. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments are requiring less time in the dental chair, causing less discomfort and creating satisfying results. One breakthrough instrument, called CEREC®, allows dentists to quickly restore damaged teeth with natural-colored ceramic crowns and onlays, saving patients time and inconvenience, all in a single dental visit.
What is CEREC®?
CEREC® is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Translated, it means that a dentist can economically restore damaged teeth in a single appointment using a high-quality ceramic material that matches the natural color of other teeth. Before CEREC®, extensive dental work in one visit was extremely difficult. Now, we can accomplish a great deal of restorative dentistry in a single visit!
How does the instrument work?
CEREC® uses CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and milling machine in one instrument. The dentist uses a special camera to take an accurate 3D picture of the damaged tooth. This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and automatically creates the restoration. Finally, the dentist bonds the new permanent restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The whole process takes place while the patient is in the dental chair.
What does this innovation mean for a patient?
A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dentists no longer need to create temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the traditional second visit has been eliminated, with no temporary restoration to hassle with. CEREC® has over a decade of clinical research and documentation to support the technology. The restorations have been proven precise, safe and effective.
How can I find out if this is an option for me?

OraVerse
Numbing Reversal Is Now Here!
Over the years, many of our patients have communicated the displeasure of being numb for several hours after having dental work completed. We have great news! We can initiate and speed up numbing reversal before you even leave the dental chair.
Research and technology advancements have given us OraVerse, an anesthetic reversal agent. We now offer our patients the ability to talk, smile, eat and drink normally in half the time! Many patients report being back to normal within an hour and a half after leaving the office.
Tell your family, friends and neighbors about this wonderful discovery. They, too, can enjoy the benefits of shorter numbing effects at our office. We look forward to providing greater comfort for all of our patients with the use of OraVerse.
Sedation Dentistry
Don't let fear make you live in pain!
At Burgess and Mason Family Dentistry, we are no strangers to dental anxiety. Luckily, we have pill sedation.
Pill sedation is a light form of sedation designed for anxious patients. Halcion, or triazolam, is a short-duration sedative used to place patients under conscious sedation. Patients using Halcion will be conscious, but very relaxed, while receiving their dental care. If dental anxiety is something you have experienced, then please ask us about sedation dentistry!
Under Armour Performance Mouthwear™
with ArmourBite Technology
Activities that require strength and speed can strain your teeth and jaw. That's why many professional athletes use Under Armour Performance Mouthwear to keep teeth from clenching, relieve jaw stress and fatigue, and potentially enhance athletic performance. Although these are designed for athletes, you don't need to play competitively to benefit from the protection that Under Armour Mouthwear provides.
How does it work?
You expect a mouthguard to protect teeth from sports-related injuries, but Under Armour Performance Mouthwear does that and more. Whether you're on the field or the court, these mouthpieces help absorb the energy transmitted to the rest of the head upon an impact to the jaw. They also keep the jaw from clenching and releasing the hormone cortisol, which can cause stress, fatigue, and distraction. Under Armour Performance Mouthwear enlarges the airway, reduces lactic acid buildup, and increases oxygen flow by pivoting the jaw forward.
This mouthguard is an excellent choice for athletes involved in football, ice hockey, wrestling, boxing and running.
-
While Using Under Armour Performance Mouthwear, you may benefit from:
- An increase in strength
- An increased reaction time
- Better endurance
- A reduction in performance-inhibiting stress
- A reduced risk of traumatic injury to your mouth
